Sherry in one minute
Sherry is the wine of the Marco de Jerez, the vineyard area around Jerez, Sanlúcar de Barrameda and El Puerto de Santa María. It is aged in oak casks using the criaderas y solera system, where young wine is gradually blended with older wine. These are the styles you will taste, according to the Regulatory Council:
| Style | How it is aged | What it is like | Serving temperature |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fino | under a layer of yeast (flor), at least two years | very dry, light, almond notes | 6 to 8 °C |
| Manzanilla | like fino, but only in Sanlúcar bodegas | dry, fresh and delicate, great with seafood | 6 to 8 °C |
| Amontillado | first under flor, then exposed to air | dry, amber, hazelnut | 12 to 14 °C |
| Oloroso | exposed to air only, no flor | dry and full-bodied, mahogany colour | 12 to 14 °C |
| Pedro Ximénez (PX) | sun-dried grapes | very sweet, ebony colour, for dessert | 12 to 14 °C |
The first four are made from the palomino grape. VOS and VORS on premium tastings mean a certified average age of over 20 and over 30 years; only amontillado, oloroso, palo cortado and PX can carry them.

Worth knowing:
- Tío Pepe (Calle Manuel María González, 12) has an accessible route and the widest range of tours, with morning and afternoon slots.
- Lustau (Calle Arcos, 53) also runs a 60 minute tour with 2 wines and four vermouths, La hora del vermut, for €26.
- Díez Mérito offers the tour without tasting for €15 and with 5 wines for €20. Outside its two set times, ask about availability by phone.
- Bodegas Tradición pairs the tasting with a gallery of Spanish paintings from the 14th to the 19th century. If you arrive after the group has started, you cannot join.
- Williams & Humbert is on the outskirts, at km 641.75 of the Madrid-Cádiz road, and its basic tour needs at least 8 people in the morning and 10 in the afternoon. Smaller groups pay the minimum, so for a couple it only makes sense if they add you to another group.
- Sandeman (Calle Pizarro, 10) was listed on its website as temporarily closed for maintenance, with no reopening date.

Sherry and horses: the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art
The show at the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art, How the Andalusian Horses Dance, starts at 12:00 according to its official programme. Show days change with the season, so check the calendar on its website before planning the rest of the day. There is also the Visita Temática, with the horses' training session, the stables and the Equestrian Art and Carriage museums.
The plan that fits best: the Royal School in the morning and a bodega in the afternoon. Tío Pepe has tours at 17:00 and 18:00 in Spanish and at 16:30 in English and German. Royal School tickets are sold on its official website or as dated tickets on Tiqets.
Sanlúcar and El Puerto: the sherry triangle
Sanlúcar de Barrameda, at the mouth of the Guadalquivir, is the home of manzanilla: according to the Regulatory Council, it can only be aged in Sanlúcar bodegas.
- Getting there without a car: buses run by the Bahía de Cádiz Transport Consortium from Jerez bus station (lines M-561, M-963, M-964, M-970 and M-971). In October 2026 there are about 14 departures a day Monday to Friday and 9 at weekends and on public holidays; the trip takes half an hour to 50 minutes depending on the line. The last bus from Sanlúcar back to Jerez leaves at 22:00.
- A bodega to visit: Barbadillo runs a guided tour with 3 wines for €22 (1 h 30 min). In English, Tuesday to Saturday at 11:00; in Spanish at 12:00 and 13:00 Monday to Saturday and at 12:00 on Sunday. Under 13s go free.
El Puerto de Santa María, on the Bay of Cádiz, is the third corner.
- Getting there without a car: the C-1 Cercanías train takes 10 minutes from Jerez. In October 2026 there are about 30 trains a day each way Monday to Friday and 16 on Sundays, according to Renfe's timetables. The last train from El Puerto to Jerez leaves at 23:13. Pay with a contactless card or phone at the gates and tap out at the exit too, or you are charged the maximum fare.
- A bodega to visit: Bodegas Osborne (Calle Los Moros, 7) runs tours with tasting at 10:00 in English, 11:00 in German and 12:00 in Spanish, booking required. From 1 June to 15 September there is an extra evening tour at 19:30 in Spanish.
To tour the triangle at your own pace, a hire car lets you see all three towns in a day, but only if someone in your group skips the tastings.
Tips before you go
- Do not drive after a tasting. Central Jerez, Sanlúcar and El Puerto are linked by train or bus; for Williams & Humbert, on the outskirts, take a taxi.
- Children: they can join the tour, and several bodegas have child prices or free entry for little ones, but in Andalusia serving alcohol to under 18s is prohibited.
- Timing: among the bodegas that publish times, almost all tours are in the morning. Tío Pepe has afternoon slots and Williams & Humbert runs pricier afternoon and weekend tours, so keep your morning for the bodega you care about most.
- Arrive early: at Bodegas Tradición you cannot join once the group has started.
- Where to stay: if you spend a night, look for accommodation in central Jerez, near Tío Pepe, Lustau and Díez Mérito, so you can walk to your tastings.
