When is the Barcelona Christmas lights switch-on in 2026?
Not confirmed. The Barcelona Tourism calendar gives Saturday 21 November 2026 from 18:00, although the header of the same listing says the dates are still to be decided, and it does not say where. Treat it as likely, not final. The last two editions:
- 2025: Saturday 22 November at 18:00, on Passeig de Gràcia between Ronda de Sant Pere and Gran Via. It was the third year in a row there. A show of about 25 minutes with acrobats, giant screens, a 14-metre tree, a countdown and fireworks (Catalan News).
- 2024: Thursday 28 November at 18:00, also on Passeig de Gràcia, with the show 'Solvern' and more than 40,000 people (Catalan News).
In 2025 the council presented its Christmas programme on 12 November (Catalan News), so the 2026 date and venue should be confirmed in mid-November. We will update this guide then.
Barcelona holds the title of European Capital of Christmas 2026, awarded in December 2025 in the category for cities of more than 100,000 people (Catalan News). The 2026 programme has not been presented yet.
How long are the lights up, and what time are they on?
The 2026 dates and hours are still pending. For reference, in 2025 (Catalan News):
- Until when: from 22 November 2025 to 6 January 2026, Three Kings' Day. Barcelona Tourism also gives 6 January as the last day for 2026.
- Daily hours: 17:30 to 1:00.
- Until 2:00: on Fridays, Saturdays and the nights of 24, 25 and 31 December and 5 January.
In 2024 the hours were the same: until 1:00 Sunday to Thursday and until 2:00 on Fridays and Saturdays (Catalan News).

Which streets have Christmas lights in Barcelona?
The 2026 list has not been published. In 2025 the lights covered 126 km of streets, 16 more than in 2024, on a budget of almost 4 million euros (Catalan News).
Designer lights (2025): besides Passeig de Gràcia, the council put up installations by architecture and design studios in these streets and squares (Catalan News):
- Plaça de Catalunya.
- Via Laietana: lit up for the first time after its renovation.
- Carrer d'Aragó: with Christmas sayings from around Catalonia written in light.
- Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes.
- Passeig de Sant Joan: with the Brosmind design first used in 2023.
Beyond the centre (2025): five themed light routes, one of them taking in the 39 ornamental fountains of the ten districts, decorated for the first time, plus the 39 municipal markets, all lit up. More than twenty light totems were also set up again in less central neighbourhoods (Ara).
The shopping streets in the centre usually have their own decorations, but they are not in the official 2025 information we checked, so we do not list them.
Seeing the lights by bus: the Barcelona Christmas Tour
TMB, the city transport company, runs a guided night tour of the lights on an open-top sightseeing bus. In 2025 (TMB):
- From 28 November to 4 January, Monday to Sunday, except 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January.
- Six to ten departures a day between 18:00 and 20:30, from the Barcelona Bus Turístic stop in Plaça de Catalunya (blue route).
- 80 minutes, with a live guide in Catalan, Spanish or English.
- The route takes in Passeig de Gràcia, Casa Batlló, La Pedrera, Sant Pau, the Sagrada Família and its Christmas fair, Passeig de Sant Joan, the Arc de Triomf, Paral·lel, Gran Via and Via Laietana.
Tickets are sold on Hola Barcelona while they last. In 2022 they sold out shortly after the season began (TMB), so if you want to go, book as soon as they are released. The 2026 edition has not been announced yet.
Fira de Santa Llúcia, by the Cathedral
This is Barcelona's oldest Christmas market: the fair dates its origins to 1786 (Fira de Santa Llúcia). It is set up on Avinguda de la Catedral, in front of Barcelona Cathedral in the Gothic Quarter.
- 2025 dates: 28 November to 23 December (official calendar). The 2026 dates have not been published.
- 2025 hours: 10:00 to 21:00 every day, including public holidays and the days before them.
- What you will find: 215 stalls in 2025, more than 160 of them selling Christmas goods: nativity figures, moss, trees, crafts, traditional instruments, tiós and caganers.
Barcelona Tourism suggests going twice, once by day and once at night, as the fair feels very different after dark (Barcelona Tourism). The Cathedral is wheelchair accessible via the ramp on Carrer del Bisbe; the main entrance has ten steps.
Sagrada Família Christmas fair
An open-air Christmas market in Plaça de la Sagrada Família, facing the basilica's Nativity facade: fir trees, nativity figures, crafts and caganers with famous faces (Barcelona Tourism).
- 2025 dates: 22 November to 23 December (betevé). The 2026 dates are pending.
- Hours: 10:00 to 21:00, according to Barcelona Tourism, which does not say which year this refers to.
- Metro: Sagrada Família (L2 and L5).
If you are combining the fair with the basilica, buy your ticket in advance: timed tickets are sold on the official website and also on Tiqets. From November to February it opens Monday to Saturday from 9:00 to 18:00 and on Sundays from 10:30 to 18:00.
Other Christmas and Three Kings fairs
Dates and hours for 2025-2026, from the events calendar of betevé, the city's public TV channel:
- Fira de Nadal al Port (Moll de la Fusta): 28 November to 6 January, 11:00 to 23:00, free entry.
- Fira de Reis on Gran Via (Three Kings fair): 18 December to 6 January, on Gran Via between Muntaner and Rocafort. 10:00 to 21:00; until 22:00 on Saturdays and the day before public holidays, and until 3:00 on Three Kings' Eve. Toys, nativity figures and sweets; Barcelona Tourism mentions more than 170 stalls (Barcelona Tourism).
For 2026, Barcelona Tourism lists the Fira de Reis from 14 December to 6 January 2027, but still marked as dates to be confirmed.
Plaça de Sant Jaume: nativity scene, tree and projections
For years the council set up a nativity scene in Plaça de Sant Jaume. In 2025 there was none in the square (Ara):
- In the square: a 15-metre Christmas tree and a light show projected every night from 22 November to 5 January onto the facades of City Hall and the Palau de la Generalitat.
- The nativity scene, inside City Hall: from 13 December to 5 January, free and with no booking. It was made by the Associació Pessebrista de Barcelona, covered almost 70 m² and recreated Catalan mountain landscapes. In 2024 it drew about 180,000 visitors (Catalan News).
What will be there in 2026, and whether the nativity scene returns to the square, is still to be announced.
The Tió and other Catalan Christmas traditions
What you will see at the fairs and in people's homes, in a few lines (source: Barcelona Tourism and its page on the Tió):
- Tió (or Caga Tió): a log under a blanket that the family "feeds" from early December. On Christmas Eve or Christmas Day the children hit it with sticks while singing, and sweets and presents appear under the blanket.
- Caganer: a figurine of a crouching shepherd relieving himself, hidden in a corner of the nativity scene. At the fairs they are sold with the faces of politicians and footballers, more as souvenirs than for the crib.
- Escudella i carn d'olla: the Christmas Day dish. First a soup with large pasta shells, then the meat and vegetables from the broth, including the "pilota", a big meatball.
- Sant Esteve (26 December): a public holiday in Catalonia too, with a second family lunch, traditionally cannelloni.
- Torrons and neules: the Christmas desserts. Torrons are nougat; neules are thin rolled wafers.
- Els Pastorets: a folk play, usually by amateur groups, about the shepherds on their way to Bethlehem and the fight between angels and devils. It is staged between Christmas and Three Kings.
- Holy Innocents' Day (28 December): Spain's April Fools' Day. The Catalan tradition is to pin a "llufa", a little paper figure, on someone's back without them noticing.
- Home dels Nassos (31 December): a character children are told has as many noses as there are days left in the year. In other words, just one.
- Tortell de Reis: the Catalan Three Kings' cake, filled with marzipan, with a figurine and a bean hidden inside.
Christmas Day and Sant Esteve: what is open and what is closed
In Catalonia the public holidays are Tuesday 8 December, Friday 25 and Saturday 26 December 2026 (Sant Esteve), and 1 and 6 January 2027. Monday 7 December is not a holiday in Catalonia (Catalan government, 2026 calendar). On those days, expect many shops and services to close or open shorter hours. What we know (2025, unless stated otherwise):
- Metro: on 24 December it closed at 23:00, and the last TMB buses left at 22:00. On 25 and 26 December it ran from 5:00 to 2:00 (TMB).
- Barcelona Bus Turístic: no service on 25 December or 1 January (same TMB notice).
- Sagrada Família: on 25 and 26 December and 1 and 6 January it opens from 9:00 to 14:00 (official website).
- Fira de Santa Llúcia: closes on 23 December, so it is gone by Christmas Day.
- Museums: each has its own closing days. Our free museums in Barcelona page has the free-entry hours and a link to each museum's official website.

New Year's Eve at Montjuïc: possible change of venue
Until 2025 the city's New Year's Eve party was held on Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina, between Plaça d'Espanya and the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc. For 2026 there is a change not yet officially confirmed: in July, city council sources told betevé, Barcelona's public TV channel, that the party will move to the Anella Olímpica at the top of Montjuïc because of building work at the Fira (betevé). Barcelona Tourism's listing still places it on Maria Cristina (Barcelona Tourism). Full details in our New Year's Eve in Barcelona guide.
In 2025:
- A show by Groupe F directed by the musician Marc Parrot, with drones, visuals and fireworks. The party began at 22:00 with a special Magic Fountain show (Catalan News).
- Free, with no capacity limit. Barcelona Tourism recommends arriving early.
- The metro ran for 43 hours non-stop, from 5:00 on 31 December to midnight on 1 January. Recommended stations: Espanya (L1 and L3), the closest, plus Hostafrancs (L1), Tarragona (L3), Rocafort (L1) and Poble Sec (L3). From 19:00 several bus lines were diverted and traffic was restricted in Plaça d'Espanya (TMB).
The Spanish custom is to eat twelve grapes on the twelve chimes of midnight. Bring your own: the 2025 official information does not mention any being handed out.
Three Kings parade on 5 January
The 2027 parade will be on Tuesday 5 January; the time and route are still pending. In 2026 (TMB):
- The Three Kings arrived by sea at Portal de la Pau, at the foot of the Columbus monument (Catalan News).
- The parade set off at about 18:00 from Avinguda del Marquès de l'Argentera and continued along Passeig de Colom, Paral·lel, Ronda de Sant Pau, Sant Antoni market, Comte d'Urgell and Sepúlveda, back along Paral·lel, Plaça d'Espanya and Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina, ending at the Magic Fountain at about 21:45.
- No capacity limit, with spaces reserved for people with an accredited disability.
- Metro until 2:00, with extra trains from 17:00. TMB added staff at Barceloneta, Drassanes, Paral·lel, Sant Antoni, Poble Sec, Espanya, Rocafort, Urgell, Universitat and Urquinaona. Most bus lines were diverted between 16:00 and 21:30.
Besides the main parade, the districts hold their own (Barcelona Tourism).
Road closures and public transport
- Switch-on day (2025): TMB diverted or shortened about fifteen bus lines and the Bus Turístic from about 17:30 to 19:00, and recommended taking the metro to Passeig de Gràcia (L2, L3 and L4), Catalunya (L1 and L3), Universitat (L1 and L2) or Urquinaona (L1 and L4) (TMB).
- Setting up the switch-on (2024): the central carriageway of Passeig de Gràcia, between Gran Via and Ronda de Sant Pere, was closed from 16:00 on the Sunday before until the morning after the event (TMB). If you are driving that week, avoid the boulevard.
- New Year's Eve and Three Kings: closures around Plaça d'Espanya, Paral·lel and the parade route (see above).
- Live updates: on tmb.cat and in the TMB app.
Tips for seeing the Barcelona Christmas lights
- Switch-on day is very crowded. In 2025, the exit from the event next to Plaça de Catalunya was fairly chaotic (Catalan News). If you are not interested in the show, go another day: the lights stay up until 6 January.
- A walking route: from Passeig de Gràcia to Plaça de Catalunya, then down Via Laietana to the Cathedral (Fira de Santa Llúcia) and Plaça de Sant Jaume. About 2 km, all flat.
- Go on a weekday. Avoid December weekends and the 8 December holiday if you want it quieter.
- What sells out: the Barcelona Christmas Tour and, at peak times, timed tickets for the Sagrada Família, Casa Batlló or La Pedrera. If you want any of them, book ahead; they are also on Tiqets.
- If you prefer a guide, there are walking tours of the Gothic Quarter and the Eixample on Civitatis.
- Where to stay: the Eixample (Passeig de Gràcia) and Ciutat Vella (Cathedral, Sant Jaume) put almost everything within walking distance. Compare prices on Stay22.
- Pickpockets: in the crowds at the fairs and the switch-on, keep your phone and wallet in front of you.
