New Year's Eve in Barcelona 2026: a practical guide

As of 20 October 2026, Barcelona City Council has not yet published its New Year's Eve programme. The only announcement so far is a change of venue: because of building work at the Fira, the party would move from Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina to the Anella Olímpica on Montjuïc. Here is what we know and how it went in 2025.

Where is the New Year's Eve party in 2026?

2026 venue: not officially confirmed. In July 2026, city council sources told betevé, Barcelona's public TV channel, that the New Year's Eve party will move to the Anella Olímpica (Olympic Ring) at the top of Montjuïc, because the redevelopment of the Fira site rules out large events on Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina. The changes could last into 2027 (betevé, 14-07-2026). The La Mercè Piromusical, affected by the same decision, has already left the avenue: on 27 September 2026 it was held at Nova Icària beach, with 200,000 people (Catalan News).

Barcelona Tourism's listing still places New Year's Eve 2026 on Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina, with no times (Barcelona Tourism). Until the council publishes the programme, assume the Anella Olímpica but check again in December. We will update this guide with the venue, times and access.

How it went in 2025 on Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina

  • The show: drones, audiovisual technology and fireworks, produced by Groupe F and directed by the musician Marc Parrot. The night began at 22:00 with a special Magic Fountain show (Catalan News, a news agency reporting the council's presentation).
  • Free and with no capacity limit, according to TMB (TMB).
  • Crowd: 115,000 people, according to betevé (betevé).
  • Checks: four access checkpoints into the avenue, partly to stop people bringing in knives (3Cat, 31-12-2025, Catalan public broadcaster).

Bring your own grapes: we found no official handout.

The 12 grapes in two sentences: you eat one grape on each of the twelve strokes of midnight, and if you finish in time you start the year with good luck. Before the strokes come the quarter chimes, which do not count, so wait for the first stroke.

What you cannot bring

In 2025 glass bottles, cans and electric scooters were not allowed in (3Cat). The 2026 list will come out with the programme. Travel light: a big backpack slows you down at the checkpoint.

All-night metro, buses and road closures

Metro: all night. TMB's 2026 timetable page says there is a continuous service throughout New Year's Eve on 31 December (TMB). In 2025 it ran for 43 hours non-stop, from 5:00 on 31 December until midnight on 1 January (TMB):

  • From 21:00 to 2:00, trains every 4 minutes or less on lines 1 and 3, under 6 minutes on L5, about 6.5 minutes on L2 and under 7 minutes on L4.
  • From 2:00 to 5:00, under 10 minutes on L1, L4 and L5 and about 11 minutes on L2 and L3.
  • Recommended stations for Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina: Espanya (L1 and L3), the closest, plus Hostafrancs (L1), Tarragona (L3), Rocafort (L1) and Poble Sec (L3). If the party moves to the Anella Olímpica, TMB will name the stations in December.

Buses (2025): from 19:00 lines 13, 23, 150 and X3 and the Barcelona Bus Turístic red route were diverted; from 20:00 also the D20, H12, H16, 46, 65, 91, 109 and X2, because of traffic restrictions in Plaça d'Espanya (TMB). At night the NitBus night buses run.

Closures (2025): Avinguda de Rius i Taulet and Carrer de Francesc Ferrer i Guàrdia were kept for emergency and security services (3Cat). With a new venue, the closures will be different.

Other trains (2025): according to 3Cat, FGC ran all night on its Vallès lines S1 and S2 (3Cat). We have not been able to check the Rodalies timetable for that night.

What opens and closes on 31 December and 1 January

  • 31 December: a normal working day. The metro runs non-stop from 5:00.
  • 1 January 2027 (Friday): a public holiday across Spain, Catalonia included (BOE). The metro keeps running until midnight. 6 January is also a public holiday.

Museums and shops set their own hours for those days: check their websites before you go.

Quieter alternatives

  • Dinner out: if you want to eat at a restaurant, book early and ask what the menu includes (grapes, party favours, closing time).
  • Ticketed parties: buy only from the organiser's official website or box office.
  • The Christmas lights: on the 31st you can walk round them before dinner. See our guide to the Barcelona Christmas lights.

Because the metro runs all night, you do not need to stay right next to Montjuïc. If you have not booked yet, look for a place to stay near a metro stop. For everything else on those days, see the Barcelona events guide.
