New Year's Eve in Malaga 2026: a practical guide

As of 20 October 2026, Malaga City Council has not yet announced this year's New Year's Eve party. In 2025 it held one in Plaza de la Constitución, at the end of Calle Larios, with free grapes, a concert and the midnight chimes with a multimedia show. This guide uses that edition as a reference, and we will update it in December.

The official party: Plaza de la Constitución

The council celebrates New Year's Eve in Plaza de la Constitución, at the end of Calle Larios. The 2026 programme has not been published. In 2025, on Wednesday 31 December (Malaga City Council):

  • 21:00 to 23:45: 5,000 free bags with the 12 grapes and another 5,000 party bags (hats, streamers, masks, Hawaiian garlands), while stocks lasted.
  • From 23:00: a concert by the band Señor Mirinda.
  • A few minutes before midnight: the band stops and the clock in Plaza de la Constitución strikes the chimes, with a multimedia projection show.
  • Until 1:30: dancing.

It is a street party: the council's statement mentions no tickets or registration. If you want a bag of grapes, arrive before the concert starts: there were 5,000 and they were handed out until they ran out.

The 12 grapes in two sentences: you eat one grape on each of the twelve strokes of midnight, and if you finish in time you start the year with good luck. Before the strokes come the quarter chimes, which do not count, so wait for the first stroke.

Rules: firecrackers, drinking and unlicensed parties

The mayor's 2025 Christmas and New Year proclamation reminded people that (Malaga City Council):

  • Firecrackers: using noisy or fire-risk fireworks in public spaces is banned. They were only allowed in isolated, non-residential areas more than 300 metres from any building, trees or green space.
  • Drinking in the street: gathering in public spaces to drink in a way that disturbs others is banned. Drinking on licensed terraces, within their hours, is fine.
  • Children: the council recommends a wristband or card with a contact phone number. For emergencies, call 112.

In 2025 the council did not publish a list of banned items for the square. Common sense says leave glass at home.

Ticketed parties: local police monitor social media and ticketing websites to spot unlicensed parties. In 2024 they checked 17, and 9 had no permit (Malaga City Council). Before buying a ticket for a New Year's party, check that the organiser states it has council authorisation, as the proclamation asks.

Getting there and back

  • Metro: Line 1 runs to Atarazanas, on Alameda Principal, a few minutes from the square; from Line 2, change at Guadalmedina (Junta de Andalucía).
  • Cercanías local trains: the C-1 (Fuengirola, stopping at the Airport) and C-2 (Álora) end at Málaga-Centro Alameda (Renfe).
  • Bus: EMT runs night lines. We have not found an official notice with the special New Year's Eve 2025 timetable, or the metro's hours that night: we will add them when the 2026 ones are published.
  • Car: the proclamation "strongly" recommends public transport into the centre over Christmas and using park-and-ride car parks. On 24 and 31 December, deliveries in the historic centre were only allowed from 7:00 to 11:00.

If you want to walk back after the dancing, look for a place to stay near the historic centre.

The Christmas lights that night

In 2025, on the night of the 31st, the Christmas lights stayed on until 6:00 the next morning, although the Calle Larios light and sound show had no music (Malaga City Council). All the details are in our guide to the Malaga Christmas lights.

What opens and closes on 31 December and 1 January

  • 31 December: a normal working day. Civil Protection runs a special operation in the centre on the eve of public holidays, roughly from 18:00 to 22:00 (2025 proclamation).
  • 1 January 2027 (Friday): a public holiday across Spain, Andalusia included (BOE). 6 January is also a public holiday.

Museums, monuments and shops set their own hours for those days: check their websites before you go. For everything else on those days, see the Malaga events guide.
