All Saints' Day in Madrid: cemeteries, tours and a candlelit concert

On 1 November Madrid families take flowers to their loved ones' graves, and the Almudena Cemetery, the largest in western Europe at about 120 hectares, fills with visitors (Madrid Tourism). Servicios Funerarios de Madrid (SFM), the city-owned funeral company, runs free activities with booking through its booking site:

  • 'Entre Halloween y Difuntos' guided tour of the Almudena: Friday 30 at 16:30 and Saturday 31 at 11:30 and 16:30. An hour and a half, groups of 30, free, in Spanish. Meet at the entrance arches (Avenida de Daroca, 90) (SFM).
  • Concierto de Difuntos, in the Almudena chapel lit only by candles: piano, violin, cello and tenor, playing classical and film music. Saturday 31 and Sunday 1, at 19:30 and 21:30. Free, 150 seats per show, booking required; seating is unreserved (SFM).
  • Other 'Difuntos 2026' routes, also free: the Necropolis, the Civil and Jewish cemeteries, the Old Cemetery and 'De los Pórticos a las Trece Rosas'. Dates and places on the SFM booking site.

Opening hours and getting there: in winter the Almudena opens from 8:00 to 18:30 (SFM). Metro: La Almudena or La Elipa (line 2). Buses: 15, 28, 106, 110, 113 and 210. Parts of the routes have uneven ground and steps.

The Cementerio Sacramental de San Isidro, Madrid's oldest cemetery, usually runs guided tours with music around these dates, according to Madrid Tourism (Madrid Tourism). We have not yet found the 2026 programme.

Saints' bones, fritters and Don Juan Tenorio

  • Huesos de santo ("saints' bones"): marzipan rolls filled with egg yolk cream, now also with chocolate, coconut or yogurt. They are made for 1 November (Madrid Tourism).

  • Don Juan Tenorio: Zorrilla's play is staged around All Saints' Day because its final act takes place that night. The best-known performance is in Alcalá de Henares, in the Huerta del Obispo garden of the Archbishop's Palace (Madrid Tourism). Check the 2026 dates on the Alcalá City Council website before you go.
