Tablao, theatre or festival: what you will see
According to Madrid's tourist board, there is flamenco in the city every day of the week, from big theatre productions to small singing and dancing recitals in tablaos and clubs. The Madrid regional government has declared flamenco an Asset of Cultural Interest.
- Tablao. A small room with a stage and set showtimes every day. The group combines singing, guitar and dance, and the show lasts about an hour. Many Madrid tablaos also serve dinner or tapas.
- Theatre. Shows by named artists on specific dates, such as the Teatro Real's Flamenco Real series or the Suma Flamenca festival at the Teatros del Canal.
- A mix of both. The Teatro Flamenco Madrid stages the same show, Emociones, several times a day in a theatre with tables.
If it is your first time and you are only in town for a few days, a tablao is the easiest choice: there is a show every evening and you can book on its website.

Tips for visitors from Japan and outside Spain
- You do not need to understand Spanish. As Madrid's tourist board puts it, flamenco's expressiveness reaches anyone, whether or not they understand the language. Corral de la Morería, Cardamomo and Tablao Flamenco 1911 also have their websites in Japanese, and the tourist board publishes its flamenco guide in Japanese.
- Dinner is late. Restaurants in Spain usually serve dinner between 20:00 and 22:30, and until 23:30 in big cities and in summer, according to Spain.info. The easiest plan is to see a show between 17:00 and 19:30 and have dinner afterwards, or choose a tablao that serves dinner.
- Tipping is not compulsory. According to Spain.info, service is included in the price; in bars and restaurants it is common to leave 5% to 10% if you wish.
- Book ahead. Tablao Flamenco 1911 recommends booking about 7 days ahead on weekdays and 15 days ahead at weekends or in high season. Cardamomo warns that in October tickets sell out in advance.
- Arrive early. At the Teatro Flamenco Madrid seating is first come, first served (it recommends arriving 20 minutes before); 1911 recommends arriving 15 minutes before, and Torres Bermejas opens the room half an hour before each show.
- There is no dress code. 1911 says it does not require formal dress, although most of the audience wears smart casual clothes. None of the other websites we checked asks for anything in particular.
- Photos depend on the venue. At 1911 you can take photos without flash and short videos, but not film the whole show. At Tablao de la Villa, only during the first five minutes, and they ask for silence during the show. If in doubt elsewhere, ask on the way in.
- Check the cancellation policy. Torres Bermejas refunds up to 48 hours before; the Teatro Flamenco Madrid and Tablao de la Villa, up to 24 hours before; Cardamomo, 1911 and Las Carboneras refund 100% up to 24 hours before and 50% between 24 and 12 hours. Las Tablas does not refund tickets, it only lets you change the date.
