From Bilbao airport: direct bus

Many travellers fly into Bilbao. Lurraldebus runs a direct line from Bilbao airport to Donostia, with an optional stop in Zarautz.

  • Where to catch it: on the arrivals level at Bilbao.
  • Timetable (from 1 October 2026): hourly departures from 7:45 am to 10:45 pm every day; on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays it starts at 6:45 am. Plus a night bus at midnight.

  • Where to buy: at lurraldebus.eus, on the Avanza Gipuzkoa website or by phone (+34 843 740 286, 7:30 am to 9:30 pm). The ticket is only valid for the day, time and route you bought.

By taxi, Aena estimates €185 on working days and €201 on holidays: only worth it for a group with a fixed price booked in advance.

From Biarritz airport (France)

Biarritz is just across the border. According to the airport, Alsa/Conda, BlaBlaCar Bus and Flixbus run departures to Donostia. Times and prices vary by day: check them and buy your ticket on their websites before you fly. If none of the times suit you, the alternative is the Txik Txak local bus (line 3 to Saint-Jean-de-Luz and line 4 to Hendaye) and on to San Sebastián from there, which is slower.

Pre-booked private transfer

With a service such as Welcome Pickups you book before you travel: the driver tracks your flight and meets you at arrivals, with a fixed price paid in advance. According to the company, the price is equivalent to a taxi from the rank.

From Hondarribia it barely beats a taxi of about €30. It is worth it from Bilbao or Biarritz if there are three or more of you, if you land late, after the last bus, or if you travel with children and lots of luggage.

Which option suits you

  • Flying into Hondarribia in daytime: BI01 bus if the timetable suits you; otherwise a taxi.
  • Flying into Bilbao: Lurraldebus direct bus. Buy ahead in high season.
  • Landing in Bilbao at night: there is still the midnight bus. After that, only a taxi or a pre-booked transfer.
  • Flying into Biarritz: an Alsa, Flixbus or BlaBlaCar bus booked in advance, or a private transfer for a group.
  • Family with suitcases: from Hondarribia, a taxi; from Bilbao or Biarritz, a pre-booked transfer.
