- The Collection brings together works by Basquiat, Warhol, Klein, Koons, Tàpies and Twombly, with rooms devoted to Yayoi Kusama and El Anatsui.
- Steve McQueen shows a dark room with no images: just two voices, Nina Simone and David Bowie singing Wild is the Wind.
- Dan Flavin, the artist of fluorescent light tubes, will fill seven second floor galleries.
- Pipilotti Rist screens her 1997 video in gallery 103 (it lasts four minutes).
And Richard Serra's The Matter of Time, the huge steel sculptures in gallery 104, is always there. Some galleries may be closed while a new show is being installed.
How long do you need?
The museum suggests anything from a 45 minute Express Route (Atrium, Serra and the current highlights) to a five hour route to see everything. For a normal visit allow two to three hours. If you are short on time, start in the ZERO room in the lobby, which explains the building and the collection, then go up to the third floor balcony to see the Atrium from above.
Puppy and the outdoor works, free
You can walk all the way around the building without a ticket. These collection works are visible from outside:
- Puppy (1992), by Jeff Koons: the flower dog in the museum square, in front of the main entrance.
- Maman (1999), by Louise Bourgeois: the giant spider next to the riverside footbridge.
- Fog Sculpture (1998), by Fujiko Nakaya, in the pond.
- Fire Fountain (1961), by Yves Klein, also in the pond.
- Red Arches, by Daniel Buren, on La Salve bridge.
Jeff Koons's Tulips are not on display at the moment, according to the work's page on the museum website.
Getting there
The address is Abandoibarra Etorbidea 2. Options from the official page:
- Metro: Moyua station, Ercilla-Guggenheim exit.
- Tram: Guggenheim stop.
- Bilbobus: lines 01, 10, 13, 18 and A7 at the Museo 1 / Henao stop, among others.
- Train: Bilbao Abando station (Renfe), a walk from the museum.
- Plane: the airport is 15 km away with a bus to the centre.
- Car: the museum has no car park of its own. There are car parks at Plaza Pío Baroja and Plaza Euskadi, and Bilbao has a low emission zone.
Before you go in: bags larger than 35 x 35 cm are not allowed (there is a cloakroom), and neither are tripods or selfie sticks. Photos without flash are allowed for private use. In summer bring a layer: it is cool inside.
